How to Route 12V Power Wire for Trailer Wiring Harness 118552 Installation in 2011 Dodge Durango

Question:

2011 Dodge Durango Would like to make sure I could tap into an aux power outlet that is only powered when the key is on. Instead of connecting the converter box wire directly to the battery. This would make the wire run much easier and neater. It is a 12 volt source. I never use it. Thanks

There are several reasons why we do not recommend using a 12V auxiliary power outlet to install a 4-pole wiring harness like # 118552.

First, this will void the product's 1-year warranty.

Second, and most important, this installation will not provide the same degree of protection for the vehicle's own internal wiring. The reason that a powered type harness like this one is specified for your vehicle is that by installing it as directed with a separate 12V power feed direct from the battery you avoid the potential for faults in the trailer wiring from causing expensive damage to the vehicle's wiring. If you used the auxiliary power outlet you would be keeping the vehicle wiring in the circuit, exposing it to any potential short-circuits and overloads.

The linked article will help you with routing that one power wire.
