Intermittent Connection Message Showing on Prodigy Brake Controller
Question:
I have had this unit for some time. This thing started acting up. I went through and changed all of the brakes on the trailer, checked the wiring for breaks and wear on both the trailer and truck. Replaced the 7 pin on the truck because some of the contacts were bent enough that they may not be making a good connection. I still get the intermittent n.c. What could be causing this?

It sounds like you have already done the hard work of checking and updating the vehicle and trailer wiring to narrow the source of the problem to your controller. Corroded connectors, damaged wiring or a shorted brake magnet are the typical causes for this issue of the controller losing connection to the trailer brake circuit. Since you have eliminated those concerns, given the age of the brake controller I would suspect it as having an internal fault.
If you have a circuit tester like # PTW2993 (which has an incandescent bulb) you can apply this to the truck 7-way with the trailer disconnected. The tester should mimic the connection to the brake circuit on the trailer and fool the controller into thinking it is connected to a trailer. If you still get the sporadic N.C. indication, then you can pretty safely presume the controller is internally damaged and should be replaced.
If you are using a quick-connect wiring adapter # 3035-P to connect the Prodigy to the under-dash port, you can still re-use that harness with your new Tekonsha controller. The current proportional controller options from Tekonsha include their Voyager # 39510, the Primus IQ # TK90160, the P2 # 90885 and the most advanced unit, the P3 # 90195. All are shown on the linked page.
The advantages of the P3 include more flexible mounting locations, storable presets for different trailers and a nicer display than the other models.
