Can the Thule Interstate Roof Cargo Bag be Used on a Volvo with No Roof Rack

Question:

We have a 2002 Volvo X-C. Could we use this bag without crossbars? If not, which crossbars would be best for us?

The Volvo XC series didn't start until the 2003 model year. The 2002 model year options from Volvo were the C70, Cross Country, S40, S60, S80, V40, V70, VHD, VN, and Xpeditor. In 2003 they dropped the Xpeditor and added the XC70 and XC90. Remember that build date is almost always 1 year before the model year of the vehicle.

So with this in mind I would need to know which specific model you have to recommend the right roof rack if you decided to go that route.

The other option is to skip that and use a Rightline bag such as # RL100S30 which can be used on a naked roof (no roof rack of any kind). It can attach either by running the straps through the interior of the vehicle or by using the car clips, # RL100600. I recommend the clips so you won't have straps getting in the way inside the vehicle.

I also recommend protective pad # RL100650 to not only protect the vehicle roof but to also help keep the bag from shifting when in transit.

And another useful item is a tire step # ALL647596 to make accessing the roof safer than standing in an open vehicle doorway. Be sure to consult the vehicle owner's manual and/or Volvo for the roof weight capacity prior to loading.
