Cargo Carrier that Will Clear Rear Bumper on 2015 Nissan Rogue with Curt Class II Trailer Hitch

Im using a Curt Class 2 Trailer Hitch Receiver 12122 on my 2015 NIssan Rogue. I also purchased a Curt 20x48 Railed Hitch Cargo Carrier Basket 18145. I havent needed to use the carrier until recently. When I tried to install it, I was just barely able to fit the post into the receiver, and the frame of the carrier was hitting the bumper. My intended use for this is for hauling camping gear around. I have reviewed your QandAs on the extenders you offer and noted that your guidance is that any use of the extender cuts the tongue weight rating by 50. - Does that mean Id have 175 lbs to work with? - If I bought one of the extenders, then cut the post down and redrilled the hole, would that change the math any? - Do any of the other carriers you offer have the necessary post length to avoid the use of an extender?

The use of a hitch extender will reduce the tongue weight capacity of the trailer hitch by 50 percent. So in the case of Curt hitch # C12122 the capacity would be reduced to 175 pounds. That means the combined weight of the carrier, # C18145 at 29 pounds, and the cargo cannot be greater than 175 pounds. In this scenario you would take 175 and subtract 29 to get 146 pounds. That 146 pounds is the most amount of weight you could put on the carrier.

If you go with an extender use # hes6 because that will provide enough clearance. Modifying the extender is not recommended (and what not change the ratings at all) because it can actually compromise the structural integrity of the adapter.

If you want to go with a different carrier then you will need one that extends out further than 7-1/2 inches which is the measurement from the center of the hitch pin hole on your hitch out to clear the rear bumper. For a different carrier that sticks out far enough we have # 63155 which measures 11 inches from the center of the pin hole to the carrier platform so you would not have to use an extender.

You should also know that Curt requires the use of stabilization strap # 18050 when using their hitch with any non-trailer load such as a cargo carrier or bike rack to be in compliance with their warranty requirements. The strap reduces some of the stress applied to the hitch.
