The Tow Ready T-One Wiring Harness # 118467 will give you a 4-way trailer connector on the rear of your 2010 Subaru Forester. A 4-way connector will give you the three lighting functions (running, turn and brake lights) and the white wire is the ground wire. It does not have a wire to control the brakes.

A boat trailer will normally have a 5-way connector. The extra wire is a blue wire that is connected to the reverse light circuit on the tow vehicle and will disengage the brake actuator on the trailer when the vehicle is put in reverse, thus turning off the trailers brakes.

I have the Tow Ready 4 Pole to 5 Pole Trailer Wiring Adapter # 20036. This adapter will have a 5-way on one end that will plug into the 5-way on a boat trailer and on the other end is a 4-way with an extra plug. The 4-way on the adapter will plug into the 4-way on your vehicle and the extra plug will plug into one end of the extra included section of blue wire. You will then connect the bare wire end of the blue wire into the reverse light circuit behind the vehicles taillights. This will give you a 5-way connection for a boat trailer.

This adapter will allow you to use the 4-way connector on your vehicle with any standard 4-way connector on a trailer. Then, if you need to connect to a 5-way boat trailer you will have the extra plug available to give you a 5-way connection.

I am sending video links that will show the #118467 wiring harness being installed on a 2009 Subaru Forester and the # 20036 wiring adapter being installed on a 2006 Kia Sedona. The vehicles are different but the wiring principle is the same.
