Recommended Weight Distribution System For Cargo Trailer With 7000-Lb Gross Weight Capacity
Question:
Im interested in weight distribution system for a new cargo trailer that I will be towing, primarily with my SUV. I use WD on my Airstream and I am familiar with the principles. The trailer has a 7000 lb gross weight and 700 lb max tongue weight. Most of the time, Ill be using it with lighter loads, say 3-5,000 pounds, meaning 300 to 500 lbs on the tongue. Does it make sense to get a 700 or 800 lb WD system, then use less spring tension when the trailer is lighter?

When using weight distribution you want to find a system where the tongue weight of your fully loaded trailer tongue weight added to any cargo behind the rear axle of your towing vehicle falls close to the middle of the system tongue weight range.
If you are around 500-lbs I recommend going with a system like the Reese Strait-Line, part # RP66083. The tongue weight range for this system is between 400 and 800 lbs. The system does not come with a hitch ball so for a 2-inch ball I recommend part # A-90 and for 2-5/16 inch I recommend part # 19286.
It may sound like overkill to go with a 8,000-lb system but you can adjust the head on the system or spring tension to compensate for the various loads you are carrying. If you lengthen the chain on the spring bars it will lessen the amount of tension for the lighter loads.
