Hitch & Related Towing Components for 2014 Lexus RX 350 AWD to Tow Travel Trailer with Brakes

Question:

Hi, I have a 2014 Lexus RX 350 AWD with Towing Prep Package. I would like to purchase all components necessary to tow my single axial travel trailer with electric brakes. The trailer has a 7-way plug. Please help me find the right parts for the following: 1. Tow Hitch receiver 2. Brake controller 3. Any wire-harness kits or parts kits to connect the brake controller to the battery and trailer. 4. Vehicle side 7-way connector socket and all necessary harness to plug into OEM tow package port. 5. Any other parts you recommend to complete the installation. Thanks.

We can help you with all the items you'll need to get your RX 350 ready for trailer towing.

Starting with a hitch, I suggest the Curt 2-inch Class III hitch # C13143. This hitch installs without drilling and includes all the mounting hardware. The linked video will show you the entire process.

You'll also need a Class III ball mount and a hitch ball of the size required by your travel trailer. The linked article will help you select a ball mount with the right amount of rise or drop to keep the hitched trailer level, which is important for good handling. The linked page shows all Class III ball mounts, including both fixed and adjustable types. Choose a hitch ball based on the ball size required by your trailer coupler.

Since you have the factory 4-pole trailer prep wiring, you'll need to convert that to a 7-way for use with a brake controller. You can use our kit # ETBC7 which includes the 7-way socket, wiring and all other parts needed to install a trailer brake controller like the excellent Prodigy P2 # 90885. An installation article is linked for you. If you do not have the 4-pole you'll also need part # 118252.

Once installed the 7-way will carry all of your trailer lighting signals, trailer brake power and 12V auxiliary power for maintaining the trailer battery's charge.

You may also care to add some universal-fit towing mirrors like the CIPA # CM11980 to give you a better view of the trailer and motorists behind you.
