How to install a Brake Controller on a 2010 Toyota Highlander

Question:

I have a 2010 Toyota Highlander Hybrid V6 with the towing package. I have installed a Curt hitch and trailer light wiring already. I need a brake controller for towing. My question is....does the Highlander have a plug under the dash for a brake controller? Or do i have to wire in a brake controller to the brake light switch, battery, etc? thanks.

The 2010 Toyota Highlander unfortunately does not have a plug and play option for a brake controller in the dash. You will need to run wires from the rear of your Highlander to the dash and the battery, but I'll try to help make that as easy as possible.

If you have the 4-way flat wiring currently installed, I'd recommend the Universal Installation Kit for Trailer Brake Controllers, # ETBC7. This kit will give you everything you need to get your brake controller pre-wired. I've included a video of the installation on a 2010 Toyota Highlander so you can see what that looks like.

If you already have a 7-way connector currently installed, then you would only need the Wiring Kit for Electric Trailer Brake Controllers, # 5506, to complete your Brake Controller wiring. The video will still help you see the process for your vehicle once the 7-way connector is installed.

For your actual Brake Controller, I'd recommend the Tekonsha Voyager, # 39510. This is a proportional brake controller so the intensity in which you push the brake on your Highlander is the intensity in which the trailer will brake as well. This really comes in handy when you are gradually slowing to a stop as well as that scary moment that you need to slam on the brakes.
