Question:
is there a video showing how to install this item? its rated 4 out of 10 on the difficulty level... So I am thinking Ill just do it myself, what tools are required for the install? Where do the stabilizer straps go? There is a similar video of the Curt 2 inch receiver hitch, item # 13591, being installed on a 2009 Chevrolet Equinox that is the same installation as your 2011 model, see video link.
You will need a 19mm socket, a ratchet wrench, an 8 inch extension, and a torque wrench to complete the installation of either the 1-1/4 inch Curt Class II hitch, # C12291, or the 2 Inch Class III Curt hitch, # 13591.
I would recommend going with the Class III hitch for several reasons. First, it gives you many more options for carrying different accessories and towing behind your Equinox. Second, you will not need an adapter that will reduce the hitch tongue weight capacity by 50 percent when used, and finally, you will not need to use a support strap when carrying non-trailer loads in the hitch. For 12 dollars more you have many more options and less hassle when loading cargo carriers or bike racks.
If you do decide to go with the 1-1/4 inch C12291 Hitch you will need to use the Curt Bike Rack Strap with Cambuckle, item # 18050, with all non trailer loads.
A cargo carrier for 85 dollars sounds like a great price. Our most economical cargo carrier that will fit into a 1/1/4 or 2 inch hitch without an adapter that reduces hitch capacity is the Curt 20x48 Cargo Carrier for 1-1/4 and 2 inch Hitches, item # C18145. This carrier has a 500 pound weight capacity, but keep in mind that you can only carry as much weight as the lowest rated item in your setup will allow. So if the vehicle is rated for less than 350 pounds you will have to adhere to that capacity including the weight of the carrier. If your Equinox is rated higher than 350 pounds you will have to stay under the 350 pound rating of the trailer hitches available for your vehicle.
