To tell the difference between a 4-Way or 7-Way Connector is to look at the connector itself and see how many pins it has. I have included a picture showing both a 4 and 7-Way for you.
The 4-Way is the basic connection for trailer lights. You have 4 pins, one controlling the left turn signal and left brake light, one controlling the right turn signal and right brake light, one for the running lights, and the last is a ground wire.
On a 7-Way connection you have the same 4 functions as on a 4-Way, plus you also have 3 more wires for backup lights, a 12 volt power connection, and finally one to power electric trailer brakes.
For your 2016 Honda Pilot the 4-Way connector is # 118760 and the 7-Way you need is # 118286.
If you're looking for a trailer hitch the etrailer Class III # e98840 is compatible with your Honda.
