Recommended 7-Way Trailer Wiring Harness And Brake Controller For 2015 Toyota Highlander

Question:

I need to install a 7 pin rv wiring harness in my 2015 Toyota Highlander XLE. I do not have the towing package. Do I need to install a custom highlander 4 pin harness first the convert to 7 pin? If so, can you please provide me with the list of parts I need to buy? Or do I just buy a 7 pin harness set up to start and skip the 4 pin to 7 pin conversion step? please provide part numbers for that if needed. Thanks!

Since you said you do not have a towing package on your 2015 Highlander, you will first need to start with a 4-way wiring harness like part # 118449. This harness simply plugs into the connection points located in the rear cargo area as shown in the linked installation video.

For a 7-way connector I recommend part # ETBC7. This connects to the 4-way connector and additional wiring is needed. I have attached a drawing that shows how the wiring is run for the # ETBC7 when installing a brake controller. I assume the 7-way is because you plan on towing a trailer with brakes which means you need a brake controller. The attached diagram shows how that is done.

When working with electrical connectors I recommend using dielectric grease like part # 11755. This keeps dirt and moisture out of the electrical connections and helps prevent corrosion.

For a brake controller I recommend the Prodigy P3, part # 90195. This is one of our most popular because it is easy to install and operate. This is a proportional brake controller that applies the brakes on your trailer with the same intensity as the brakes in the towing vehicle.
