Stabilization Strap Required for Non-Trailer Loads w/Curt Trailer Hitch on 2012 VW Jetta Sportwagen
Question:
The limit is two bikes - Does this hitch require a strap to the top of the hatch to offset stress? If so, how does one do this with a Sportwagen that includes the plastic visor over the rear hatch. Also noted a tech stating hitch limit 2,000 lbs. Total towing capacity of Jetta and or Passat is 1,000.

The Curt trailer hitch # C11474 requires the use of stabilization strap # 18050 for any non-trailer load, such as a bike rack, per Curt's warranty requirements. Where you attach it to the vehicle is up to you but as long as it is on there you would be in compliance. That is one of the problems with the Curt hitches that require the strap; they tell you that you need it but don't say where to attach it to the vehicle!
The hitch is tested at and rated for 2,000 pounds but you are still limited to the towing capacity of the vehicle since it is lower.
What I recommend is to go with the EcoHitch Hidden trailer hitch # 306-X7284 because it does not require the use of a stabilization strap when using a bike rack. For towing you can go with the etrailer 2-3/4" Rise or 4" Drop Ball Mount Kit - 7,500 lbs. # EBMK4. I would suggest using the included ball mount in the rise postition, but this could differ based on the height of your trailer.
And for trailer wiring you can use # C59496 to add a 4-Way connector to the rear of the vehicle.
