which color wire on the standard 5 prong connector do I connect to the red wire or trailer brake wire to. I connected it wire by wire as I cut the old connector off and my trailer brakes do not work. When I back up they lock up instead of releasing

Sounds like you are trying to activate a reverse lock out solenoid on a surge brake trailer so that it can back up freely. The fifth pin that is the furthest from the jacketed ground pin is the fifth circuit to use.

This circuit would need to tap into the reverse light circuit of your tow vehicle. I attached an install video for the 5-way adapter part # 47515 that shows this process on a 2014 GMC Acadia.
