Actual Loaded Cargo Weight Capacity When Using Pro Series 63153 on 2009 Subaru Forester

Question:

Hi, I saw your video on the subject carrier and the subject vehicle. Im confused about actual load ratings. For a 350 lb hitch tongue rating, I found a formula online, and I calculated the maximum conservative load - at full distance from the vehicle listed as 33.5inch or 2.8 in your video. 350 lbs / 2.8 ft = 125 lbs. Is this correct? seems like 125 lbs / ft. and that there is a continuum of available safe loading from the point closest to the vehicle, all the way to the farthest point of the cargo carrier. Obviously it is better to load heavier material closer to the vehicle, but with medium to large plastic tubs that fit tightly in the carrier space, this may not be possible. If the cargo carrier itself weighs roughly 56 lbs 59 minus shipping carton, then this only gives a usable conservative safe load of about 69 lbs. Is this right? I hope I am missing something, because I really need one to carry a bit more weight safely! : Any information on this would be most appreciated.

The actual amount of cargo weight you can load on a hitch-mounted carrier like the Curt # C18150 or the Pro Series # 63153 can be determined by taking the vehicle/hitch tongue weight (TW) rating and from that subtracting the weight of the cargo carrier itself.

Let's say your hitch's safety sticker says it has a TW capacity of 350-lbs. From this you will subtract the weight of your chosen carrier, 50-lbs for the Curt and 55-lbs for the Pro Series, leaving you with an available cargo weight capacity of approximately 300 and 295-lbs respectively.

You are correct that placing heavier items closer to the vehicle is the preferred loading method (it's true with bike racks also) but you do not have to concern yourself with calculating the weight per linear foot. So long as your total loaded cargo weight remains within the hitch's available limit you can safely load your cargo tubs as you wish.

If you wish to lock the carrier to your hitch you can use Anti-Rattle Trailer Hitch Receiver Lock # 63232 and for a cargo net we offer part # C18201. If this will not fit your cargo tubs then a set of cam-buckle straps like # 05605 from Erickson might be a better choice.
