Brake Controller Installation 2016 Toyota Tacoma Without Factory Trailer Connector
Question:
I recently installed a Hitch and wiring on my 2016 Toyota Tacoma that did not have a factory installed tow package. My installation consisted of the Curt T-Connector Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector - C56282, the 4foot Pigtail Wiring Harness for Pollak Replacement 7-Pole RV Socket - PK11998, and the Pollak 7- and 4-Pole Trailer Connector Socket w/ Mounting Bracket - Vehicle End - HM40975. I now find that I need to install a brake controller for the trailer. How would I install this using my current installation with the 7-pin connector side of the HM40975. It seems I would need to connect to the pin for brake control, but not sure the installation process to get there. Thanks.

In addition to the brake controller you mentioned, the Curt # C24VV TriFlex and the Universal Wiring Pigtail, part # C51515, you'll also need our brake controller installation kit, part # 5506. The kit includes all the wire, circuit breakers and hardware you'll need to complete your installation.
Start by locating the black and blue wires on your # PK11998 pigtail. The blue wire carries the output from the brake controller. The black wire carries 12-volts from the battery to any trailer mounted accessories that might need power. The duplex cable included in the kit has a black and a white wire in it. Connect the black wire from the pigtail to the black wire in the cable. Connect the blue pigtail wire to the white wire in the cable. Run the cable under the truck to the engine compartment, avoiding anything hot like exhaust system components and anything moving like steering or suspension components. The black wire will attach to the positive battery terminal via the 40 amp breaker included in the kit. The white will run through the firewall and ultimately connect to the blue wire exiting the rear of the brake controller.
The brake controller would mount to the underside of the dash within easy reach of the driver, preferably to the right of the steering column. The C51515 pigtail that plugs into the controller has 4 wires exiting the rear. The black wire would be extended with a piece of the leftover duplex cable and would connect to the positive battery terminal via the 30-amp breaker included with the kit. The white wire is extended and connects to the negative battery terminal. The blue wire connects to the wire ran from the blue 7-way pigtail wire at the rear of the vehicle. The red wire taps into one of the wires exiting the brake stop lamp switch. The switch is located at the top of the brake pedal and could have several wires exiting it. Use a circuit tester like part # PTW2993 to test each wire. You're looking for the wire that only shows voltage when the brake pedal is pressed (not when the running lamps are turned on, or the turn signals, etc). My research indicates the wire should be blue in color, but it's best to use the circuit tester to confirm.
I'll link you to some FAQ articles and an install video that you should find helpful. The video I've linked shows a different controller being installed on an older Tacoma, but the procedure is the same regardless of what controller you're using. Other than the fact that you've already installed a 7-way, and the color of the brake stop lamp switch, the procedure for your truck will be almost identical.
