Why Does the Reese Weight Distribution Shank # RP54970 Have Two Pin Holes

The shank label shows 1500 or 1000 lbs tongue weight. Do the two pin hole locations affect this? Which pin hole should be used or is it simply preference for longer or shorter shank.

You are absolutely right. The pin hole used on the shank determines whether or not the # RP54970 has a 1,000 or 1,500 lb tongue weight capacity.

I attached a picture that shows which one has either capacity.
