Can a 1-1/16 Inch Trailer Axle Spindle Handle Speeds of 75 Miles Per Hour
Question:
With a 1-1/16inch spindle, can I travel 75 mph on the interstate with a 12inch tire/wheel or a 15inch tire wheel? Does it matter or does the difference between a 8-ply or radial make a difference? Will a small spindle 1-1/16 take the heat of 75 mph?

Spindles typically do not have a speed rating. Traditionally, the component that limits the trailer speed is the tire. My contact at our spindle manufacturer confirmed that the spindle will perform well when the tire speed is complied with. I also recommend servicing your trailer often if you are driving at speeds upward of 75 mph. You will want to ensure the bearings are properly lubricated and red grease, like # L11390, will work well. I've attached a help article on trailer maintenance for you.
None of our 12 inch trailer tires have speed ratings. Our manufacturers do not put a speed rating on tires smaller than 13 inches. Some 15 inch tires are rated for 65 mph while others are rated for speeds up to 81 mph, it depends on the manufacturer. Bias ply tires are also not speed rated, but radial tires do get a speed rating.
If your trailer has 12 inch wheels and tires, there are a couple of things you will want to check before sizing up to a 15 inch wheel. First you will want to check the clearance at the trailer frame, body, and/or fender. A 15 inch tire can be between 5 inches to 9 inches larger in overall diameter than a 12 inch tire and the width can vary as well.
Another thing to check for compatibility is the trailer hub. If the hub is smaller than 6-1/2 inches in diameter, then a wheel larger than 12 inches cannot be used on the hub. You can replace your existing hub with one that is compatible with larger tires and wheels. If your hub's inner and outer bearings are the L44649 bearing, the Trailer Idler Hub Assembly for 2,000 Pound Axles # AKIHUB-545-2-LF-2K will work well as a replacement and allow you to use 13 inch -15 inch wheels.
This hub has a 5 on 4-1/2 inch wheel bolt pattern. If you decide to size up to a 15 inch tire and wheel and you have sufficient clearance, the Taskmaster Provider ST205/75/R15 Radial Trailer Tire with 15 White Spoke Wheel # TA67VR will work well for you. This tire and wheel combo has a weight rating of 1,820 pounds max load at 50 psi and is rated for up to 81 mph. I've attached a review video of this tire and wheel for you.
