Can a Stationary Fifth Wheel Hitch in a 2012 Ram Short Bed Be Used

Question:

We have a long bed Ram now, but want to get a newer truck, and prefer the short bed. We have a new Curt Q20 hitch and want to be able to use it. We are looking at a 2012 Ram Mega short bed. Is there a safe way to make this setup work?

To use a stationary hitch like your Curt Q20 # C16130 in a short bed truck you would have to change the pin box of the trailer to a Sidewinder. Otherwise you would have to go with a slider hitch like part # C16541.

You will need to remove the pin box of the trailer and replace it with a Sidewinder pin box. Sidewinders are pin box specific so you will first need to know what pin box you have now in order to pick out the correct one.

There should be a sticker or a stamping on the OEM pin box of the trailer that will list the pin box number that is on the trailer.

Once you figure out which pin box you have you can check the FAQ I attached that has a chart that shows the correct Sidewinder to get based on which pin box you have.

For a custom fit fifth wheel rail kit for your truck bed you would want the Curt part # C16420-204 that will minimize drilling and install time.
