Adding a 7-Way Trailer Connector to a 1992 Ford Explorer and Using Adapters for 5-Way Trailer Plugs

Question:

I have a 1992 Ford Explorer with 4 way flat trailer plug. I have 2 different trailers to tow - 1 5 way flat electric brake trailer and 2 7 way round surge brakes trailer. Both trailers are dual axle and my trailering is pretty minimal, dry storage to boat ramp and back. What products do I need. thanks

For starters you will need to install a 4-Way flat connector # C59236 on your 1992 Ford Explorer. Consider it as the base set up for everything else that will be needed to work with your trailers.

With it installed you will then need to install installation kit # ETBC7. This will add a 7-Way blade style connector and retain the 4-Way.

Now, if the 7-Ways on your trailers require round pins and not the blade style then you would need to use an adapter, # 47595. If they do use the blade style then you would not need an adapter.

The 5-Way is a little trickier because adapters are set up with the 5th function connected to the reverse light circuit on a 7-Way for boat trailers with an electric reverse lockout. But I have a solution. All you will need is a trailer side 7-Way, # A7WCB, and a vehicle side 5-Way with wiring, # HM47900 to make an adapter. You would wire the 5th function blue wire on the 5-Way to the trailer side connector 5 o'clock position (if looking at where the wires attach).

Then all you would need a is a brake controller to activate the electric trailer brakes. I recommend the P2 # 90885 because it is easy to set up and use and it is reliable. I have included some links that show and explain the ETBC7 installation for you on a similar vehicle.
