How Does a Brake Controller Install on a 2009 Toyota Tacoma without Trailer Connector

Question:

I have a 2009 Toyota Tacoma pre-runner sr5. It is wired with a 4 pin connector. I added a 4-7 pin adapter. I grounded my white wire and I have a blue to run to trailer brake controller and the black for auxiliary power. I am a confused whether or not I can use a factory wire harness or not. If so, is there a wire not in the harness left out for me to connect my blue wire to on my 4 to 7 adapter?

To install a brake controller in your 2009 Toyota Tacoma you already have all the parts you would need basically. There isn't a plug-in brake controller wiring adapter available for your vehicle since it does not have a factory 7-way.

If you check out the help article I attached on installing a brake controller from scratch you will see how you would need to install the controller. The blue wire of your 7-way will run up to the blue wire of the controller you go with.

For a brake controller I would recommend the Prodigy P2 Brake Controller part # 90885. This is our best selling brake controller because of how well it works and how easy it is to setup. This is a proportional brake controller that senses the amount of braking the tow vehicle is applying and applies a proportionate amount to the trailer brakes.
