The MX style base plate was designed for use on heavier vehicles like full size pickups and SUVs. Its design eliminates the need for a crossbar at the point where the tow bar and the base plates connect. The # 1439-3 MX base plate isn't compatible with the safety chain anchor brackets for the Roadmaster Sterling Tow Bar, the anchor brackets would need to be attached to the frame of the vehicle or welded to the receiver portion of the bracket. The MX base plate isn't compatible with the # RM-4000 Guardian or the Tow Defender # RM-4700 Rock Shield or with the Stowaway, StowMaster or the StowMaster All-Terrain Tow Bars.

The XL base plate, part # 1439-1 would have no fit or compatibility issues. You would need a crossbar at the disconnect, if you didn't already have one.

I've linked you with some more articles about Flat Towing Systems.

Either base plate would be compatible with your # RM-422 Blackhawk II tow bar, but I'd personally choose the XL base plate # 1439-1 because it would allow you to use a rock shield to protect your vehicle from road debris.
