Options for Using 2-Inch Class III Bike Rack in 1-1/4-Inch Class II Hitch
Question:
I was looking at the drawtite receiver for my 2015 Impala LTZ for my current bike rack. We have a thule with a 2inch receiver that we use on our truck, but we were hoping to be able to use it for the car as well. Unfortunately, I see that only 1-1/4inch receivers are available, I really dont want to buy another bike rack. Do I have any other options? Thanks.

A hitch adapter can allow a 2-inch accessory item like your Thule rack to be used in a 1-1/4-inch Class II hitch like Draw-Tite # 36538. But the downside to using any adapter is that it will cause you to lose 50-percent of your hitch's capacity. This is due to the change in the geometry of the system when an adapter is added.
An adapter like Brophy # HT5R will fit your 1-1/4-inch Class II hitch and provide a 2-inch receiver opening as well as a 5-inch rise for better ground clearance. But again, the hitch's 300-lb tongue weight (TW) rating instantly becomes only 150-lbs. So as long as your rack and bikes together do not weight more than this 150-lbs then you will be okay. Do note that you will notice more random motion of the rack when used with an adapter due to the additional connection point. You might find it worth using a stabilizing strap like # 18050.
A better option is for you would replace your T2 bike rack with an economical class II rack like the Lets Go Aero NEO2 Bike Rack for 2 Bikes - 1-1/4" and 2" Hitches - Wheel Mount # B01748. This rack will let you carry 2 bikes up to 40 pounds each.
