Trailer Hitch Recommendation For Carrying Bike Rack on 2003 VW Jetta

Question:

I have a 03 Jetta sedan. I want to get a hitch for bikes. Is there one with a 2 in receiver thing? 2 in seems stronger with less flex Thank you

Due to the size of the vehicle and the strength of the vehicle chassis where the hitch attaches, the only hitches available for the Jetta is a Class I that uses the 1-1/4 inch receiver opening. A Class I hitch with its 200 lb tongue weight capacity will be plenty strong for a bike rack as long as the weight of the rack and the bikes placed upon it doesn't exceed the 200 lb tongue weight capacity of the hitch. 2 inch hitches have a much higher weight capacity, high enough to damage the vehicle. This is why they're not available for your Jetta.

For a hitch, I'd recommend the Draw-Tite Class I hitch, part # 24748, which will allow you to carry up to two bikes. Adding more bikes than that with a Class I hitch will move the weight further away from the hitch, which can apply too much leverage to the hitch and its attachment points to the vehicle that could cause damage. As long as you remain within the weight capacity of the hitch, everything will work perfectly. This hitch is compatible with single exhaust Jetta models only, and it won't fit GLI models with the factory installed ground effect package.

Since you're concerned about things possibly flexing, using a very lightweight 2-bike rack like the Kuat Beta, part # B202-114 would be an excellent choice for you.

If you click the provide links, you can see an install video for the hitch and a demonstration video of the bike rack I recommended.
