Bearing Kit for Snowmobile Trailer with L44649 Inner and Outer Bearings
Question:
I am borrowing a snowmobile trailer 14foot Sled Bed from a friend, but I always carry a spare set of bearing for the trailers I personally own, and I would like to buy a set before I drag this thing any long distance. Spare bearings are a cheap insurance for a happy trip. I opened the hubs on his trailers for inspection, and a quick bearing maintenance repack, etc. The part number on his bearings is L44049, and with my cheap calipers, the axles appear to be a straight axle no taper 1inch maybe 1.063. I did NOT press out the inner bearing. I decided if it aint broke, dont fix it and just assume its the same. Maybe I was wrong in doing so, and should have checked. Could you give me a little clarity with what set of bearings I should buy for a spare roadside set. Thanks.

It sounds like the bearing you pulled is actually an L44649 which is the inner and outer for 84 spindles which are straight spindles. These are usually found on lower capacity trailers so it makes sense on a snowmobile trailer. For a bearing kit I recommend # BK1-150 because it comes with both bearings, a seal, cotter pin, and EZ lube spindle washer. You may not need all of the parts but you never know!
Since packing bearings on the side of the road would totally suck, why not make it easier with a packing tool such as # L70025 which you would use with a regular grease gun, such as # PTW54290. It is important that you make sure the grease you use in a potential emergency situation is compatible with the grease you used to originally pack the bearings. Otherwise the grease can break down. Nothing beats good ol' wheel bearing grease # L11465. I have also linked our help article on grease.
