Can Brake Controller Be Used If Boost Function Isnt Working
Question:
Hi, Not sure if my boost button has given up the ghost or not. I have n.c. displayed with no connection and when connected I have a .c. . The boost button appears it is not working. I only tow a lightweight Avan Aliner about 800 Kg. or so and drive conservatively with a manual diesel. The brakes do work, I test them after every hook up on our slight downhill driveway where I can stop the rig by pressing the slider in without touching the foot brake. Is this a reasonable test. I also apply the brakes slowly and cautiously on the flat and can feel some positive retardation.

It sounds like the methods you use to test your brakes are great. Testing the trailer brakes with just the manual override lever ensure that the trailer brakes themselves are working properly. And when you test the brakes while traveling on flat ground, you can ensure the trailer and tow vehicle are braking well together.
As long as your brake controller works well to signal the brakes for your trailer, the boost settings not working isn't going to have a negative effect for you. If in the future you decide you would like to tow a larger trailer as well as a smaller trailer, you will likely want a controller with a functioning boost in order to increase braking for the larger trailer.
If you want to go ahead and upgrade your controller, I highly recommend the Prodigy P2 # 90885. This is a proportional controller similar to the Primus IQ # TK90160, but will support trailers up to 4 axles, help protect the brake controller and trailer breakaway system from shorts, and is compatible with both electric brakes and electric over hydraulic brakes. I have attached a review video of this controller for you.
