Highest Weight Rated Trailer Hitches for a 2016 Toyota RAV4 and a 2016 Nissan Rogue

Question:

Im thinking of buying a 17 foot Maxum boat and trailer and need to find a hitch that would meet this need on either a 2016 Rav4 or Nissan Rogue. Thanks

The highest rated trailer hitch that we carry for a 2016 Toyota RAV4 is the etrailer Class III Trailer Hitch, # e98864, with a towing capacity of 3500lbs and a tongue weight capacity of 525lbs. The highest rated trailer hitch we carry for a 2016 Nissan Rogue is the Curt Class III Trailer Hitch, # C13204, with a towing capacity of 3,500lbs and a tongue weight capacity of 525lbs. The Hidden Hitch trailer hitch for the RAV4 has the higher weight ratings.

Keep in mind, these are just the maximum ratings for the hitches and they are extremely overrated for these two vehicles. You will be limited by the towing capacity of the vehicle. The RAV4 has a maximum trailer towing capacity of 1,500lbs and that is assuming there is only one passenger and no additional cargo. The towing capacity will decrease as more passengers and cargo are added to the vehicle.

The Rogue has a maximum towing capacity of 1,100lbs with the same stipulations. If your boat and trailer will exceed the towing capacities of these two vehicles, then I recommend looking into a larger SUV or pickup truck.

If you decide to stay with one of these two vehicles, then you will also want a tail light wiring harness, # C59496 for the RAV4 and # 118480 for the Rogue. I have attached a few installation videos for the trailer hitch and wiring that we had on a 2015 Nissan Rogue for you to check out. At this time we do not have installation videos on a 2016 RAV4.

The last item that you will need is a ball mount kit. I recommend our etrailer.com Ball Mount Kit, # 989900, because it comes with ball mounts with different rises and drops to fit most situations.
