Trailer Brakes Recommendations for a 3,500 lbs Boat Trailer Axle

Question:

I have a 3500 lbs axle boat trailer that has the brake mounting flanges on it. The holes are approx. 2 3/4 inches apart, is this a standard dimension? I do not see the specifics for this measurement on the brake listings. Thanks

You have the standard brake mounting flanges on your axle. If you want to get really technical, the bolt holes should actually measure about 1/16 larger than 2-3/4. That is the standard dimension for 3,500 lb axles.

If you are looking for hydraulic brake assemblies, I strongly recommend the 10 Inch Free-Backing Dacromet Brake Assemblies, # AKFBBRK-35L-D for the left hand and # AKFBBRK-35R-D for the right hand. Free-backing brakes will not lock up when you are backing up the trailer and the dacromet coating will hold up against corrosion better than painted assemblies.

If you are looking for electric brake assemblies, which aren't very common on boat trailers, then I recommend our 10 inch Self-Adjusting Brake Assemblies, # AKEBRK-35L-SA for the left hand and # AKEBRK-35R-SA for the right hand. These brakes will adjust themselves as the brake shoes wear down so you don't have to worry about weak braking over time.

In addition to the brake assemblies, you will also want to pick up the mounting hardware, 4 lock wasters, # 5-8, and 4 nuts, # 6-17, per brake assembly.

If you also need new hubs and drums, then I would go with the Dexter Hub and Drum Assembly # 84546UC3. This hub had the most common wheel bolt configuration, 5 on 4-1/2 inches, and it comes with the bearings and grease seal for a 3,500 lb axle.

I have attached some help articles and installation videos on trailer brakes for you to check out.
