Hitch, Cargo Carrier, and Cargo Bag Recommendation for a 2015 Ford Explorer
Question:
2015 Ford Explorer - leaving for long trip from MO to CA. Trying to decide between cargo hitch rack vs. roof rack with Thule box. Concern is hitch rack reduces ground clearance but roof rack has weight limitations. Have luggage for 5. Short of bigger truck, what suggestions do you have?

For luggage for 5 people you would need a decent amount of cubic feet so either route you suggested could work. But the big thing will be considering the amount of weight you plan to carry and if the roof of your vehicle has the capacity.
For a long distance drive though, I think you would be happier with a hitch option. A hitch option won't cause a reduction of fuel mileage like a roof box and would be less noisy too.
If you don't have a hitch yet the Curt part # C13386 has been confirmed as a fit and would give you 400 lbs of tongue weight capacity to work with.
The cargo carrier part # 63153 would be a great option too. This carrier measures 24x60 inch and could fit the 20 cubic foot cargo bag part # 988501 well. This carrier also has a 2-1/2 inch rise built into the shank to help with ground clearance.
