How To Repair Yakima SkyBox Rooftop Cargo Box With Key Broken Off In Lock

Question:

I have a Yakima Skybox 18 Carbonite. One side latch is operational and allows me to get into the box, however, a key was broken off in the other latch lock core and it is locked. If it is not possible to replace a lock core when a key is broken off in it, is it possible to remove the latch from the inside and then install replacement latches Y8880348 with new lock cores?

I spoke with my Yakima representative, who tells me that your best bet would be to get the remaining piece of the key out of the lock if at all possible. To do this, you'll need some spray lubricant like PB blaster or WD-40 and a small tool like a dental pick and some fine needle nose pliers.

First, thoroughly saturate the lock with the spray. Then use the dental pick to work around the serrated edge of the key, pulling gently outward. Once you get enough of the key extricated, you can grab onto the remaining piece with the pliers and remove it from the lock.

If that fails, you can indeed use the # Y8880348 replacement SuperLatch Handles. The latch/handles do indeed remove from the inside.
