Identifying Replacement Bearings for Boat Trailer with 4-on-4-Inch Hubs

Question:

Got a boat on trailer sitting on blocks in drive. Hubs were smoking when pulled in so pulled hubs to replace bearing. Got a kit at tractor supply but the axle size is 1inch and is too big. There are no make or model # visible on hub or bearings. Bearings are tapered. think outside diameter on above kit is OK H4-C-BP-B Can supply photos. Your bearing do not supply dimensions just part #s great for you but does me no good. Think the Axles come out 7/8inch OD and the hub is 4 1/8 long 4 bolt 4inch pattern for 4:80 x 8 tire and wheel

As it happens, all of our 4-on-4 hubs use inner and outer bearing # L44643 or # L44649. All idler hubs and hub/drums using these bearings are linked for your review.

If you cannot find part numbers on your trailer's bearings (please see the linked photo for their usual appearance) you'll need to take very precise measurements of your spindle and hub in order to determine which seals and bearings will fit them. The photo shows where to measure the spindle for seal and bearing inner diameters (position B for the seal, and positions C and D for the inner and outer bearings). You'll need a precision caliper like # PTW80157.

Once you've found the correct bearings or replacement hubs you may want to use a bearing packer like # L70025 along with marine grease # L54FR and a compatible mini-grease gun like the # 30-800.
Since your hubs got very hot during their last use be sure to carefully inspect the spindles and hubs for any heat-related damage.
