Choosing a Ball Mount for 2013 Toyota Venza with Class III Trailer Hitch to Tow Boat Trailer
Question:
I recently purchased a 2013 Toyota Venza Limited AWD with the Draw-Tite Class III hitch already installed. No other parts or a wiring harness were attached. I will be towing a 17foot ski boat and possibly a weight-appropriate camping trailer. My boat trailer requires a 2inch ball not sure what a camping trailer might require. I expect I would be safe in getting a Class III ball mount with 2inch ball, but would a 2inch drop be advisable? Should I buy a safety chain as well? Finally, which wiring harness would you recommend? Thank you

A Class III ball mount is a great option for you with the Class III trailer hitch installed on your 2013 Toyota Venza. Since your boat trailer has a 2 inch coupler, you will certainly want a hitch ball that has a 2 inch diameter ball in order to seat the coupler properly.
Another thing to consider when choosing a ball mount is the height of the hitch receiver and the height of the trailer coupler. You will want to choose a ball mount that will allow you to tow the trailer level. The difference in the hitch receiver height and the trailer coupler height will tell you what rise or drop ball mount you will need. I have attached a help article on how to measure to choose the correct ball mount for you. If you would like to let me know the hitch receiver height and the trailer coupler height, I will be happy to make a ball mount recommendation for you.
If your boat trailer does not already have safety chains, I strongly recommend installing and using safety chains with your boat trailer. Most states require safety chains be used when towing a trailer. I recommend checking the towing laws in your area to ensure you are complying with the regulations. You can use a chain like # 2118-605-04 to make safety chains for your trailer.
The wiring harness I recommend for your 2013 Toyota Venza is the Tow Ready T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector # 118482. This harness will install in your vehicle's existing wiring. The converter power wire will need to be connected to the vehicle battery to the included fuse. I have attached an installation video of this wiring harness for you.
I recommend checking your Venza's owner's manual to confirm to towing capacity of the vehicle. I found the Trailer Weight Rating to vary depending on if the vehicle is equipped with the tow package or not and the type of engine in the vehicle.
