Parts Needed For LED Trailer Lights to Work in Combination with a 2011 BMW X5 with LED Tail Lights

Question:

Hello, I have a 2011 BMW X5d that has LED rear lights. Im purchasing a trailer that also has LED lights. My understanding is that Ill need an adapter so that I dont get lamp bulb out warnings on the X5. Ive looked at both the Tow-Ready 20142 and the Curt C57003 and am not sure which one I need. It seems like I need the Curt adapter, but thought I would contact you to check. Thanks!

Great news, I can help you figure out what you will need for your LED trailer lights to work in combination with your 2011 BMW X5 LED lights.

If you have a factory 7-way installed on your vehicle from the manufacturer, then you may need one of the two adapters # C57003 or # 20142 you referenced. Both would work and complete the same function, the Tow Ready # 20142 is a popular option among our customers.

If you happen to have an aftermarket one like our # 119250KIT that has a power wire that is run all the way back to your vehicles battery you will not need any adapter. Typically, the adapter is needed on European vehicles with LED taillights if the 7-way harness is factory installed.

I have linked a video on the # 119250KIT wiring harness to help you better identify which style of harness you may have.
