Comparing Wire Rope and Synthetic Rope for Use in Winch

Question:

Could someone please tell me what are the pros and cons of the wire rope versus the synthetic rope? Thank you!

Expert Reply:

Wire rope is typically more durable and will last longer than synthetic rope. It cannot be cut like synthetic rope, and wire rope will not fray or fade either.

Synthetic rope is less likely to damage cargo or other materials the rope may come in contact with. Additionally, synthetic rope will not rust if it gets wet like a wire rope may.

The type of rope you will want to use is dependent on the situations you will typically be using the winch. If you are planning on pulling something on a trailer, such as a vehicle, where the rope may contact the body, I recommend using a synthetic rope.

But if you're using the winch in a situation where the cable will not contact the cargo and you plan on testing the weight limits of the winch I recommend using a wire rope.
