Recommended Replacement Tires for Aliner Camper When Tires Are Rubbing Inside Of Fenders

Question:

Hello, Since the Aliner brand changes hands in about 2007, there is not too much info on all the previous models left available. Perhaps from your experience you might know, what were the recommended tire sizes for the 2002 Aliner trailers? Mine is used and it has 5.30x12 installed on it. But I can see black marks on the inside of the wheel housing. This tells me that the tire size may be a bit too large. What if I go one size down and use 4.80x12 size? The trailer should weigh under 1000 lbs, I assume. Will the load C rate be sufficient in your opinion? Thank you!

Thanks for the photo of your camper. Looks like a nice area.

I was able to find the owner's manual for the Aliner trailer. The tires that came on the trailer originally are 4.80 x 12 and the wheels have a 5 on 4-1/2 bolt configuration. The tire also has a section width of 4.9 inches.

The tires I recommend for your trailer are the Kenda K353 Bias Trailer Tire, part # AM10062. These are Load Range C tires and have a maximum load rating of 990 lbs at 90 psi. The outer diameter of this tire when inflated is 20.7 inches. The tires you have on the trailer that are 5.30 x 12 have a diameter when inflated of 21.9 inches. Looks like newer tires will give you an additional 1/2 inch of clearance and keep the tires from rubbing the inside of the fenders. The 5.30 x 12 tires have a section width of 5.6 inches so the smaller 4.80 x 12 tires will be a little over 1/2 inch narrower, which may help with the clearance also.

To save the hassle of having tires mounted, you may be interested in a wheel/tire combo like part # AM30660. This 4.80-12 bias-ply tire is a Load Range C tire and comes mounted on a white powder coated steel wheel with an 8-spoke design. I have attached a link to a product review video you can check out.

A larger tire size can bump up the trailer a bit but not by much - do you know about how much you're wanting to raise the trailer? Also, can you tell me what tire size is currently being used (it will be printed right on the tire's side wall).

At that age the trailer might be sitting lower because it's due (or past due) for a new axel. Check with pros.
