4-Way, 7-Way and Brake Controller Recommendation for a 2007 Dodge Durango
Question:
I need advice on a trailer wiring harness for a 2007 Dodge Durango, 4X4 SUV. I want to end up with a multi-tow receptacle similar to the Hopkins 47185 7:4. Is the correct base harness for the 2007 Durango the Hopkins 42245 or the 118390? It appears that the the 118390 powers directly off the battery whereas the 42245 powers off the lights. Is there an advantage of one type of power feed over the other?

For your 2007 Dodge Durango you would want the Tow Ready trailer wiring harness part # 118390 to start with a 4-way.
Not all vehicles can handle the additional amperage draw of the trailer taillights on the vehicle taillight circuits. Those vehicles need setup that draws power from the battery. Some vehicles have higher rated circuits that can handle this, and others need to have the power drawn straight from the battery to protect the taillight circuits.
For your vehicle you need to install a harness that draws power from the battery to protect the taillight circuits. I also attached a help article on running the power wire for you to check out as well.
To convert the 4-way to a 7-way would only require the part # 37185. If instead you need to operate the brakes of a trailer you would need the # ETBC7 and a brake controller.
For a brake controller I would recommend the Prodigy P2 Brake Controller part # 90885. This is our best selling brake controller because of how well it works and how easy it is to setup. This is a proportional brake controller that senses the amount of braking the tow vehicle is applying and applies a proportionate amount to the trailer brakes.
