Why Would Core of Ground Wire of Trailer Wiring Turn Black

Question:

I am changing to an new connector because my lights gradually quit working. I noticed when stripping the wires that the white wireground had turned black and the others are shiny copper. This must indicate a problem, but I am not sure what. I dont want to do the change over until I know what causes this and how to remedy it. I have just taped it up for now. Looking forward to your thoughts. Thanks,

A ground wire getting hot and discolored is typically a sign of too much amperage being pulled through the wire.

An easy fix for that is to reduce the amperage draw of your trailer's wiring by switching to LED lights or by going with a heavier gauge ground wire that can handle the additional amperage.

I attached a page that has all of the LED trailer lights we offer as well.
