Can Weight Distribution be Used on a 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee with Curt Trailer Hitch

Question:

Will the Curt hitch added to the Grand Cherokee handle leveling bars? I have a fear the whole assembly will be to low to the ground. If this wont work whats a solution. I plan to pull a 3000lb enclosed trailer with a 1500lb race car. Help.

I believe you are referring to weight distribution, also called and equalizing hitch. Yes, the Curt trailer hitch # C13182 is rated for use with weight distribution.

The height may or may not be a factor when using a weight distribution system. It depends on if the shank has to be used in the rise or drop position. With the Curt hitch installed it measures approximately 15-1/4 inches from the ground to the top of the receiver opening.

To determine if a rise or drop is needed to tow the trailer level the next step is to measure the distance from the ground to the bottom of the trailer coupler with the trailer level. If the trailer is higher the difference is the amount of rise that will be needed. If the hitch is higher the difference is the amount of drop that will be needed.

Enclosed trailers for cars are usually fairly low to the ground. But the only way to know for sure is to measure. If the trailer coupler is taller and the shank can be used in the rise position then ground clearance will likely not be an issue if you use a trunnion bar system (round bar systems decrease ground clearance).

The other option is to install rear helper springs on the Jeep to prevent it from sagging instead of using a weight distribution system. Even something as simple as Coil SumoSprings, # CSS-1145R, would help.

If you decide on weight distribution then to choose a system you will need to go by the total tongue weight of the set up. This is calculated by taking the tongue weight of the trailer, when loaded and ready to tow, and adding to that the weight of anything loaded behind the rear axle of the tow vehicle.
