The Tow Ready Custom Fit Vehicle Wiring, # 118344, is the wiring harness you will need if you do not have the factory tow package and your 2001 Ford Explorer XLT is a two door.

If your 2001 Ford Explorer XLT does not have the factory tow package and is a four door, then you will need the Tow Ready Custom Fit Vehicle Wiring, # 118345. This harness has a modulite converter that draws power for the trailer lights directly from the vehicles battery.

Both of the wiring harnesses connect the same way. They will plug into the back of the taillights. There is no cutting or splicing required.

On the # 118345 harness with the converter for the four door you will also need to run one wire to the positive battery post via an included inline fuse.

About 90 per cent of the Ford Explorers came with the factory tow package and with your vehicle being a XLT model it will probably have the tow package. You might want to check your vehicle before ordering to see if you have the OEM plug under the vehicle.

If you have a factory tow package on your 2001 Ford Explorer XLT then you will need the Tow Ready Custom Fit Vehicle Wiring, # 118241. This will give you a 4-flat trailer connector and will plug into the OEM plug that is located underneath the vehicle in the rear.

I am sending links with the instructions for all three of the wiring harnesses.
