Does a Trailer with Two 3,500 Pound Axles have a Gross Capacity of 7,000 Pounds

Question:

So, if I have two, 3,500lb axles, is the trailer rated for 7,000lbs?

Most likely, the trailer would be rated for 7,000 pounds gross if it has two 3,500 pound axles. But there should be a sticker or plate somewhere on the frame near the front of the trailer that lists its official capacity.

Also, the trailer can only be rated as high as the lowest rated component. So for example if the coupler is only rated for 6,000 pounds and everything else is rated at 7,000 then you have to go by the 6,000 pound amount.

The issue with trying to upgrade a trailer's capacity is determining the weakest link. Replacing the axles with higher-rated units will increase your axle capacity, but it's very possible that something else (the frame, suspension, coupler, etc) is still rated for 7,000 pounds - so you'll still need to follow that number until it's been upgraded as well. With all this in mind, I really can't say whether or not you'd be able to safely pull a 10K trailer after adding 5K axles.

I have a auto transporter 7000lb GVWR with two axels, rear axel has no brakes but has flange. 5 stud 14” rims. On both axels. I what to add brakes to rear axel. So I’m I suppose too order 3500 lb brake and dum assemble because there’s two axels that are 3500 lb each making the trailer 7000 GVWR?

For your 3500 lb axle, you will want the Electric Trailer Brake Kit - Self-Adjusting - 10" - Left and Right Hand Assemblies - 3,500 lbs # AKEBRK-35-SA. You will use # 10-1-1 wire and Deka Heat Shrink Butt Connectors # DW05745-5 to connect to your other axle brakes power and then give each assembly a separate ground. I've linked an article to assist. For your hubs, I recommend the Trailer Hub and Drum Assembly - 3,500-lb Axles - 10" Diameter - 5 on 4-1/2 - Pre-Greased # AKHD-545-35-K if your 5 bolt hubs have that dimension which is by far the most common. I've attached an article to help you with the measurements to confirm.
