In the strictest sense of the word, "waterproof" would mean water absolutely cannot enter a product. In reality there will always be some circumstance where some moisture could enter a product like a cargo box, even an excellent one like the Yakima SkyBox # Y07336. In the world of wristwatches, as an example, NO watch is marketed as "waterproof" simply because at some level of pressure ANY of them will leak. These are therefore described as "water-resistant" to a specified pressure.

Cargo boxes like the SkyBox are designed to provide the best possible protection to your enclosed belongings. The top lid overhangs the bottom portion of the box to provide resistance to entry of water, dirt, etc. Still, if driving at 65-mph in a torrential windy rainstorm after several hours you could find some moisture entered the box.

The best strategy is to wrap any especially delicate items in plastic bags before loading them into the box. This extra degree of protection for such items should be sufficient to keep them completely dry even in the worst conditions.
