Can Electric Trailer Brakes Interact with Hydraulic Brakes on 2012 Nissan Armada
Question:
Found 2 wires cut on camper left rear wheel brake at campground after towing camper with 2012 Armada. Apparently from road debris. Repaired wiring on brakes, and began towing camper. Armada brakes on all 4 wheels were dragging and got very hot. We stopped, camper brakes werent hot werent dragging apparently. Emerg brake was not on, hadnt been used. After stopping, brakes begin working normally. Didnt turn Armada off during stop.

Your trailer's electric brakes do not interact with the hydraulic brakes on your Armada. The two systems are entirely separate from one another. If the brakes on the Armada are in good working order the only way that they would heat up from towing is if the trailer brakes were not working and the Armada's had to do all the work of stopping both the vehicle and the trailer. You would probably feel this when you slowed the vehicle as the trailer pushing into the back of the SUV.
For safety's sake I suggest you have the Armada checked out to ensure that its brakes are in good shape and operating normally.
You can easily test your trailer brakes on their own, without the vehicle connected, by applying 12V power directly to the brakes circuit on the trailer's plug with one end of the trailer jacked up. You can use the Armada's battery or a spare 12V battery if you have one. You can refer to the linked image that shows the typical wiring configuration on a 7-way plug (although your trailer could be wired differently). If you can hear the brakes engage (a gentle humming sound should be heard) and if you cannot rotate the wheel with power applied then the brakes are working.
