Installing a Trailer Brake Controller on a 2006 Dodge Ram with Factory 4-Way
Question:
I have a 2006 dodge 1500 slt. It comes with a 4 prong trailer connector in the back and has the blue brake controller connector under the dash. Im trying to install a brake controller. I have already purchased a 7 way adapter. My question is what do I do now? Ive had one dealership and two trailer shops tell me that the wiring for the brake controller should already be installed and just plugs into the extra 2 wires on the 7 way adapter. I have not been able to find the wiring for the brake controller in the back of the truck. Am I just not seeing it or is it actually not there?

On a 2006 Dodge Ram that came with a factory installed 4-Way trailer connector the brake (blue) wire does not run all the way back to the back of the truck; it stops at the connector that is located under the driver's side wheel well. In order to finalize the installation you must splice into this wire and continue it back to the plug.
The 12 volt circuit wire is also not present at the back so what I recommend is to use about 20 feet of wire # 10-2-1 (sold by the foot) to complete the installation. You will also need a 40 amp circuit breaker, # PK54540, for the 12 volt circuit.
You can follow the relevant parts of the links I have included to complete the installation.
