Trailer Hitch Class Differences and Wiring Recommendations for a 2007 Lexus GX 470
Question:
Hello. Quick Question. Why do class 3 hitches have different weight capacities? Is the metal different, do they attach different? I had assumed that all Class 3 hitches had the same weight capacities. Im looking into getting a hitch for my Lexus and want to make sure I understand. Thank you!

Trailer hitches get their capacities based on the vehicle, how they install on the vehicle, how they are designed, and how they are tested. With all of these factors involved you can have hitches of the same Class with slightly different capacities. All of the hitches for your GX 470 are Class III hitches.
The key is to compare the vehicle capacities usually found in the owners manual, with the hitch capacities and go with whichever is lower, the hitch or the vehicle. I have included a link to a help article on trailer hitch classes for you.
The most popular hitch for your 2007 Lexus GX 470 is # 75155. If you plan on doing some towing I recommend etrailer ball mount kit # 989900. It comes with 2 ball mounts; one with a 3/4 inch rise or 2 inch drop and one with a 2-3/4 inch rise or 4 inch drop. It also includes a 1-7/8 inch ball, 2 inch ball, hitch pin with clip, and a storage bag.
If the ball mount kit does not have the right rise or drop to tow the trailer level, use the link I have included that explains how to measure to choose a ball mount to tow the trailer level.
And to add a 4-Way trailer connector use # C59496.
