Is Vehicle Tongue Weight Limit Applied When Using Hitch Mounted Accessories On 2006 Honda CR-V
Question:
My 2006 Honda CRV has a maximum towing capacity of 1500 pounds. This equates to a maximum tongue weight of 150 pounds when pulling a trailer. Does the 150 pound limit apply when using a cargo tray or bike rack instead of a trailer?

Expert Reply:
The 150 lb limit does apply to any accessory attached to the trailer hitch on your 2006 CR-V. The weight you place in the hitch includes the carrier as well as the cargo in the carrier.
The bike rack you asked the question from is the Thule Hitching Post Pro, part # TH934XTR. This bike carrier weighs about 40 lbs so that weight needs to be added to the bike weight when carrying it in the trailer hitch.
If you are planning on carrying bikes with alternative frames like kids bikes or women's bikes I recommend using an adapter bar like part # 64005. This attaches between the seat post and the handlebar stem and allows the bike to be carried more level in the carrier while providing additional ground clearance. I have attached a product review video for this adapter bar.
