Recommended Weight Distribution, Transmission and Power Steering Coolers for 2010 Honda Odyssey

Question:

Im looking for an expert recommendation for a weight distribution hitch w/ sway control, transmission cooler, and power steering cooler for my 2010 Honda Odyssey and 21.8foot 2015 Jayco jayflight 195rb. I dont plan on towing daily, but when I do, the camper might be heavy because Im living in it. The campers unloaded vehicle weight is 2800 lbs. dry hitch weight is 280 lbs. gross vehicle weight is 3500 lbs. cargo carrying capacity is 700 lbs. Thanks for your help!

The keys for selecting a weight distribution (WD) system are to confirm that your 2-inch hitch is rated for use with such systems (check its safety/warning sticker) and to measure your fully loaded trailer's actual tongue weight (TW). To that you will add the weight of anything in the vehicle's cargo area that sits behind the rear axle - say a generator or loaded cooler - which together give you your total TW figure. The trailer's dry hitch weight is not enough to choose a suitable system.

With that total TW figure you can choose a system with the right amount of tension so that it can shift some of that TW forward to the Odyssey's front axle without being so stiff that it creates odd handling characteristics. Ideally your total TW will fall into the middle of the system's operating range. You can use the link I included for you to select your total TW figure and then see suitable systems. I recommend a system with built-in sway prevention that stops sway before it even starts.

Let's say your total TW is 600-lbs. Just click on that figure to see suitable systems. The system I recommend is the Reese Strait-Line # RP66083 since it is compatible with your electric brakes, allows you to back up the trailer and it includes the shank portion of the hitch. All you need to add is the hitch ball, either 2-inch # A-90 or 2-5/16-inch # 19286. The two linked articles may be helpful.

For a transmission cooler you can use as large a unit as you have space to mount it. Coolers are not vehicle-specific. A great choice is the Derale # D13502 which is an efficient Class III unit. If you have enough space you could use larger cooler # D13503 for more cooling efficiency. For a power steering cooler you can use Derale # D13212 which is a 4-pass cooler for maximum reduction of your steering fluid temperature. Install videos for both coolers are linked for you reference.
