Enclosed Cargo Carrier Recommendation that Allows Rear Cargo Area Access

Question:

1. When the unit is folded down, I need to know if I will be able to open the tailgate without it hitting the unit 2. What is the purpose of the rise shank? Is there any way to remove the rise shank, since I dont need the extra ground clearance? Or is the another product that has lockable lid and can be folded flat down and folded flat up?

Based on your questions I have a better solution for you than the part # M2205-01-02 as it would not tilt away. Instead, you would want the Yakima EXO Swing Away Enclosed Cargo Carrier - 2" Hitches - 10 cu ft - 100 lbs # Y62VR as it can swing away from the rear of your vehicle and allow complete access to the cargo area which will allow the tailgate to open. If you need more room, Yakima has a double option with # Y74ZR. You can also swap out one or more of the cargo boxes for cargo baskets or bike racks with the Yakima EXO modular system, these accessories sold separately.

Then to answer your other question, normally a rise shank is used to give the product more ground clearance.
