Which Trailer Connector is Needed for 2009 Chevy Traverse without Tow Package
Question:
Can I use a 7 way connector or should I get a 4 pin flat connector? I would prefer to use the 7 pin if there is some advantage to it. Not sure what the differecnes are.

The trailer connector you need will depend on the type of trailer you are planning on towing and whether or not your Traverse is set up with factory tow package wiring. If you are going to tow a smaller utility or flat bed trailer that does not have electric brakes or on board accessories that would require power like an electric jack or interior lighting, then a 4 pole connector should be just fine for you.
To provide a 4 pole connector on your Traverse without factory tow package wiring, you would want to use part # 118450. This wiring harness plugs into the existing wiring connections located behind the tail light assemblies. No cutting or splicing is required.
On the other hand, larger trailers with electric brakes require the 6 or 7-way trailer connector. If your trailer has electric brakes, you will need a brake controller to actuate them. Our best selling brake controller is the Tekonsha Prodigy, part # 90885.
To install the controller on a traverse without factory tow package wiring, we offer a Brake Controller Installation Kit. If you need the 6-way connector, you would use part # ETBC6 and part # ETBC7 for a 7-way connector. You would still need part # 118450 to tap into the lighting circuits on the tow vehicle.
We have a Brake Controller Installation Guide that you might find helpful, I will provide a link to it below.
Even though your Traverse does not have a trailer connector at the back, you may find that there is a tow package connection located behind the rear bumper near the drivers side frame rail. Check for a round connector, see attached photo, with a cap on it. Once the cap is removed you can use this connector with a 7 and 4-Way trailer connector like part # HM40975 that you mentioned. This connector will provide you with both a 7-Way and 4-Way connection for ease of use with most any trailer.
