First, if you don't already have a trailer hitch, I recommend the Curt Trailer Hitch # C13201. This Curt trailer hitch is Class III rated, has a maximum gross trailer weight of 4,000 pounds, and is our most economically priced trailer hitch for your 2012 Dodge Journey. I have included an installation video of this trailer hitch for you.

Second, I recommend our etrailer.com Ball Mount Kit # 989900. This ball mount kit comes with two ball mounts of different rises and drops, two hitch balls of different diameter, a pin and clip, and a ball mount bag. This kit allows you to tow a variety of different size trailers. I have attached a help article on how to choose the correct ball mount for your trailer.

Next, if your Journey R/T has LED taillights, I recommend our Tow Ready T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness # 118536. If your vehicle has incandescent bulb taillights, I recommend this Tow Ready T-One Wiring Harness # 118567. A 4-way wiring harness will provide the taillight functions for your trailer.

Once the 4-way harness has been installed, you will also want to install this universal installation kit, # ETBC7. This kit will include all of the wiring hardware necessary for you to have a fully functioning 7-way trailer connector. I have attached an installation video of this kit on a similar video for you to see what is involved in the installation.

Once all of your wiring has been installed, you will want to install a brake controller to activate the trailer brakes. For a brake controller, I recommend the Tekonsha P3 Brake Controller # 90195. The P3 offers an LCD display, continuous diagnostics, and automatically levels when mounted within a 360-degree vertical range.
