Wiring and Supplemental Braking Installation to Flat Tow a 2015 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited

Question:

I plan on purchasing the Roadmaster Brakemaster 9160 and want to ensure I am doing things correctly. Heres what I have so far - 2015 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Blue Ox baseplate Bulb and socket kit 7 blade to 6 blade coiled connector cable RV to Jeep 2006 Winnebago Journey 32T Blue Ox Alpha tow bar Reading through the Brakemaster installation instructions, I understand the mechanical section but I am not sure on the lighting. 1. If I am using the separate bulbs in the Jeepss tail lights, how do I wire the Brakemaster? 2. When I apply the brakes in the RV, the separate bulbs should light up on the Jeep. Is the relay used to keep the Jeeps lights off and to allow the added bulbs to function? I assume that the diodes are not needed. 3. The Journey has separate brake and turn signals, so I purchased a 5 to 4 wire converter as the Jeep has combined brake/turn bulbs. It looks as though the 9160 comes with a similar converter. whats the best way to go here? 4. The instructions say that a battery disconnect switch is required for the Jeep. Can you tell me why? 5. Lastly, do you know if the 2006 Journey has an air brake port at the rear of the coach. I apologize for the questions, but want to do things right. I am a new RV owner and this is my first attempt at towing a vehicle.

On your 2015 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited you should not need the brake light relay # RM-88400. The bulb and socket kit is bypassing the vehicle wiring and the vehicle wiring uses a combined system anyway (brake lights and turn signals on same circuit) so the relay is not needed.

Seat adapter # RM-88130 is recommended for use with the BrakeMaster system # RM-9160. And a 12 volt outlet kit # RM-9332 is also recommended.

The bulb and socket kit wiring will not tie into the braking system so you would just follow the appropriate parts of the instructions, linked for reference, regarding any wiring including the break away system and monitoring LED light.

The BrakeMaster does not come with any sort of wiring converter. I think you might be looking at the black break away switch. If your motor home already has a trailer connector then it is likely that the separate signals are already converted at the connector. If there isn't a trailer connector or if it has one with separate turn signals/brake light circuits then you would need converter # RM-732 to take the separate circuits and combine them out to a 4-Way such as # 18252.

I do not know if the RV has an unused air fitting that you can tap into. Winnebago might know if the information is not readily available in the owners manual/literature. I have also included a couple of helpful links on flat towing for you!
