How to Determine Square Trailer Axle Capacity

Question:

I have a trailer frame that was given to me but I cant find any specs on the axle to know the weight ratings. They are 6 lug rims and one of the axles has brakes with a 12inch drum. I have enclosed pictures to see if that will help. The axles are solid steel and appear to be 1 3/4 square.

Helpful Expert Reply:

Square axles can be tough to determine capacity.

However, most 12 inch brake drums that have 6 lugs have between a 5,200 and 6,000 lb rating so it would seem you have axles with around that capacity. Those leaf springs are very thick as well.
